Notes
University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: GJ01-109. Militia and crowd, outside Huzhou Guild (湖州會館), Huiwen Road (會文路), Zhabei, Shanghai. Underground Communist Party activists and trades union militia had seized control of parts of Shanghai in late March 1927. Within weeks, they were betrayed by their erstwhile allies, led by Chiang Kai-shek, and massacred. See GJ01-108 and JM01-068 for related photographs. See also a photograph taken on the same occasion, on the Virtual Shanghai platform (image ID 61). Other photographs of the demonstration, held in the French Foreign Ministry Archives, can also be found in Virtual Shanghai. We are grateful to Katya Knyazeva for identifying the date and location.
