University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: HD-s21. The Bund, looking north-eastwards. Peking Road (Beijing Dong Lu) goes off on the right. The building on the right is the premises of Jardine Matheson & Co (with flag pole). The building in the distance, in the centre of this photograph, is the Oriental Bank (a new premises, built in 1869). Photograph taken prior to trees growing near where the pony and cart (with a foreign boy passenger) are standing. Photograph taken prior to embankment of the Bund (1886). So approximate date: 1869 - early 1870s. See HD-s22.
