Notes
University of Bristol – Historical Photographs of China reference number: HR01-090. The caption in the album is a play on the English word 'character'. 海滨邹鲁 ('haibing zoulu') denotes a place of cultural vibrancy (high moral and academic excellence by the sea). This wall was opposite the Longjin School (龙津义学), Kowloon Walled City, Hong Kong and next to the Kui-xin pavilion (which remains to this day, to the left of this photograph). The characters were written on the wall by the Chinese general Chang Yu-t'ang (张玉堂), with his hand wrapped in cotton. "Mac.D." is also in HR01-055.
