The "Raid Roma-Tokio" long distance flight challenge from Rome to Tokyo took place in 1920. It was the brainchild of the Italian aviator, author, and politician, Gabriele D'Annunzio, and Japanese writer, Harukichi Shimoi. The flight was completed by a relay of SVA-9 reconnaissance biplanes made of wood, metal and fabric. See: https://www.earlyaviators.com/eferrar1.htm.
