University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: Hy01-41. 'Ethel' = Ethel Mary Maitland (née Wilcockson), who was the only child of Herbert and Susan Wilcockson, born on 18 November 1873. She married Edward William Maitland on 10 October 1899 at the Holy Trinity Cathedral, Shanghai. The couple had three children: Margaret Amelia Maitland, Alice Eleanor Maitland and Jean Ethel Maitland. Ethel Mary Maitland died on 13 June 1951 in Surrey, England. The background (the steps of a house) in this print has been blurred out during printing, isolating/emphasising the subject.
