A real photo post card published by The Universal Postcard & Picture Co., Shanghai, numbered 543, and captioned: 'Chinese beggar carrying her babies' and 'Photo by Burr Photo Co'. The image was published in ‘Shanghai - Sketches of present-day Shanghai’ by R. Barz (Centurion Printing Company, 1935), page 140, and captioned: ‘Refugees from the interior of the country, carrying all their belongings on a bamboo. Not finding any other means of earning a livelihood, they are often compelled to join these guilds of pauperism and become for reasons of necessity a veritable molestation to the storekeeper as well as to the shopper in the street.’ See JC-s101, Pe01-010, Ro-n0489 and Wr-s104.
