University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: JC-s362. This theatre was built in 1925 and opened as Daxin Theatre, later being renamed Tianchan. It was an opera theatre and stars like Mei Lanfang performed there. Chinese characters along the top of the print: 戀善團體聫合救宊會救濟戦區難民委員會天蟾收容所. Approximate translation: Lianshan troupe cooperate with the salvation committee to provide relief to the war zone refugee relief committee, Tianchan Theatre collection point. Chinese characters top left: 民國二十六年 / 九月撮. Approximate translation: Taken in September, Year 26 of the Republic (i.e.1937). Neon sign on the top floor: 天蟾舞䑓 (Tianchan Theatre).
