A sketch of the audience made from memory by an eyewitness, Edward Baldwin Malet (1837-1908), who was Secretary to the British Legation. This sketch was copied by E.H. Grimani, a resident of Beijing, and Grimani’s artwork was photographed by Thomas Child. The audience of foreign ministers and consuls with the Tongzhi Emperor (1856-1875) in Tse Kuang Ko (Pavilion of Violet Light or Purple Pavilion), Peking (Beijing) was on 29th June 1873. Prince Kung (Yixin, 1st Prince Gong) is kneeling as if addressing the Tongzhi Emperor. With Prince Kung on the dais are four other princes. Facing the Emperor, left to right: Wenxiang (director of the Zongli Yamen); J.H. Ferguson (Holland); François-Henri-Louis de Geofroy (France); Thomas Wade (Britain); Frederick F. Low (USA); General Vlangaly (Russia). Nearest to the viewer: the Interpreter, Carl Heinrich Bismarck. After the audience, prints of Child’s photograph were sold for 50 cents each by Lane, Crawford & Co.
