SCOTT / THE 30th DAY OF APRIL 1887 / THE 50th OR JUBILEE YEAR OF THE REIGN OF / HER MOST GRACIOUS MAJESTY / QUEEN VICTORIA / F. J. Marshall / H.B.M. Office of Works / B. C. G. Scott / H.B.M. Consul / Yu Hung [.]'. Benjamin Charles George Scott (1847-1929) was the British Consul in Wuhu until 1888, after which he was consul in Yantai (Chefoo) until 1889, when he was appointed Consul in Beihai (Pakhoi). He later served as Consul in Tianjin (Tientsin) from September 1897 to 1899, after which he was Consul-General in Guangzhou (Canton) until 1902. Francis Julian Marshall served in the Office of Works in Shanghai until 1897 and was responsible for the construction of several British consular buildings in China.
