Born in Manchester in 1882, Oliver Heywood Hulme was briefly employed by the Chinese Maritime Customs Service from 1905 to 1906 before moving to Chinese Imperial Post Office. He served in post offices in Beijing, Shanghai, Taiyuan, Nanjing, Anqing and Wuhan before being transferred back to Beijing and appointed secretary of the Chinese post office’s audit department.
