A group of missionary women and children, Kuliang

Notes

University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: Os02-018. Photo from an album (UoB reference Os02) kept in the School of Oriental and African Studies Archives, London (SOAS reference MS 380 876/2). No caption in the album for this photograph, which could well be of a school for missionary children (‘mish kids’) at Kuliang, near Fuzhou. The first boy from the right, sitting in the third row, might be Harold Dewey Gardner, a son of Rev. G. M. Gardner from the ABCFM (American Board Commission of Foreign Mission) church. Harold’s brother, Leon Llyod Gardner, might be the first boy from the left, sitting in the third row. Willard L. Beard and Ellen Beard’s children, Gould, Phebe, Geraldine, and Dorothy, are also thought to be in the group. Another print of this photograph, with additional captioning, is held at Yale University (Willard L. Beard’s letters. See https://divinity-adhoc.library.yale.edu/BeardPapers/Beard1905.pdf).
