Photo from an album (UoB reference Os04) kept in the School of Oriental and African Studies Archives, London (SOAS reference MS 380 876/4. Banners request "Be Quiet!" and "Give Way!". A variant photograph by William Saunders, taken at the same place, is reproduced in 'History of Photography in China, Western Photographers 1861-1879' by Terry Bennett, on page 332. The same boys with banners also appear in Os04-014. See Os04-019 (which is another staged photograph taken at the same open space, said to be Songjiang District, Shanghai).
