In 'Illustrations of China and its People' (1873-1874), vol IV, John Thomson wrote: “The dwelling … is that of Mr. Yang, a gentleman enormously rich … In this paradise was a miniature lotus lake, spanned by a marble bridge … quaint and pretty … second smaller court, to be seen in No. 14.” Thomson took several photographs in Yang Fang's garden, including portraits of women, and showed Yang how to make certain photographic chemicals. In 'Through China with a Camera' (1898), Thomson described Mr Yang as being 'devoted to photography'.
