University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: PF01-18. Photograph by John Thomson, taken at the same place as PF01-20 and PF01-28. In 'Illustrations of China and its People' (1873-1874), vol IV, John Thomson wrote: "The subject of this picture (No. 51) is an old Tartar bannerman, a humble member of the Manchu camp, who kept watch at the gate of the French hôtel by night".
