Typed caption by Malcolm Rosholt, with typo errors, on the back of this photograph, which is printed on late C20th/early C21st Kodak paper stock. Workers unload small boats in the foreground. HMS Cumberland is in the background. This photograph shows the Royal Navy County Class cruiser HMS Cumberland, prior to its extensive refit/reconstruction in 1935. See Ep01-258, Ep01-259, JC-s147, JC-s149 and Ro-n1006.

Caption on photograph

Flag on stern seems to be Union Jack, and vessel may be H.M.S. Cumberland, anchored at No.1 buoy, opposite Customs Jetty in Shanghai, but date and source of this picture is uncertain. Ship did not remain long and was probably replaced by U.S. Augusta, flagship of U.S. Asiatic Fleet, Harry E. Yarnell commanding. I took picture of Augusta (multiple i.e.) on August 21, 1937. Ship remained in Shanghai only few weeks and returned to Norfolk, VA. Fate of Cumberland: see Janes.
