'Taiping' or 'Tae-ping' (i.e. 'Heavenly Peace') is the house on the left in this photograph. 'Taiping' was the hong of Gilman, Bowman & Co., tea traders, and the residence of William and Elizabeth Vacher. Photograph taken from the tower of Trinity Church (now Holy Trinity Cathedral), looking north-eastwards, with the Huangpu River in the background.
