University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: VH02-181. Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution reference: L04357-078b. Photograph taken from the tower of Trinity Church (now Holy Trinity Cathedral). 'Taiping' or 'Tae-ping' (i.e. 'Heavenly Peace'), on the far right of this photograph, was the hong of Gilman, Bowman & Co., tea traders, and the residence of William and Elizabeth Vacher. 'Sin-tai-ping', with the long balcony, is the middle of this photograph. 'Chun-tai', the hong of Birley Worthington & Co., is on the left. The British Consulate is the large building flying a flag, in the distance, middle left, just below the horizon. A very similar photograph, attributed to William Jocelyn, is reproduced in 'History of Photography in China 1842-1860' by Terry Bennett, on page 135.
