University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: VH03-64. Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution reference: L00381-037. The Praia Grande is also known by its local Cantonese romanisation Nam Van 南灣 (lit. ‘South Bay’, Nan wan in Mandarin). This photograph was most likely taken from Penha Hill ('Colina da Penha' 西望洋山). On the right, on top of the Guia Hill: Guia lighthouse ('Farol da Guia' 東望洋燈塔), built in 1865 and considered the oldest modern lighthouse of South China. Below on the right: S. Francisco Garden ('Jardim de São Francisco' 加思欄花園) and S. Francisco Barracks ('Quartel de São Francisco' 加思欄炮台).
