University of Bristol – Historical Photographs of China reference number: WS01-170. This wide street is by the river and is about three miles in length. The marines and volunteers faced a crowd, said to be of about 20,000 strong, who are not shown in this photograph. The people standing behind the line of defenders are from the various concessions. See WS01-168 and WS01-169.
