University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: YC-s30. Five to eight buffaloes were required for each winch, to raise bamboo tubes of brine in the salt well. Sometimes eight men took the place of each buffalo. In 1915, one thousand buffaloes died of plague at Tzuliuching.
