University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: GA01-038. Photograph by Felice Beato. The Upper North Taku Fort was one of the four forts (two on the north and two on the south side) of the Pei Ho (Bei River) that constituted the principal defense of Peking from the ocean. The picture shows the central gate through wihch the British entered the fort. We can also see the defenses immediately around the fort: two 18 foot wide ditches filled with water and a forest of bamboo spikes.
