University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: FH01-232. A 'red herring' is a clue or piece of information which is, or is intended to be, misleading or distracting. This wandering torpedo was fired by the submarine HMS Orpheus (OR) and it ran aground twenty miles from Hong Kong. Claimed by the Chinese, the torpedo was carried five miles inland and, eventually, returned to the destroyer HMS Wishart. See FH01-228, FH01-229, FH01-230, FH01-231 and FH01-233.
