University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: Fr01-110. This photograph by John Thomson appears in his 'Foochow and the River Min'. Flat-bottomed river boats were designed to traverse rapids and shallow waters pulled by ropes. The first Chinese character painted on the boat translates as ‘four’.
