A temple beside the River Min, Nanping (Yanping), Fujian

Notes

University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: Fr01-111. Photograph by John Thomson. Note the upturned boat resting on a frame beside the building. Deborah Ireland spotted Thomson’s photographic equipment in the shady passageway, identified by Michael Pritchard as a camera, a dark box for processing plates, collodion plates in a drying rack, a chest for chemicals (or maybe for a camera), and a wooden barrel likely for water. See a scan of Thomson’s negative at the Wellcome Collection (refs 19342i and 19343i). A variant of Fr01-111 was published in Thomson’s ‘Foochow and the River Min’ (1873). See PF01-36 (another print).
