Notes
University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: PF01-36. Photograph by John Thomson. Note the upturned boat resting on a frame beside the building. Deborah Ireland spotted Thomson’s photographic equipment in the shady passageway, identified by Michael Pritchard as a camera, a dark box for processing plates, collodion plates in a drying rack, a chest for chemicals (or maybe for a camera), and a wooden barrel likely for water. A variant of this photograph by John Thomson was published by him in his ‘Foochow and the River Min’ (1873). See a scan of Thomson's negative at the Wellcome Collection (refs: 19342i and 19343i). See also Fr01-111 (another print).
