Notes

University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: Ro-n0106. The negative strip has been perforated with the number 122[...]. This perforation may have happened when the 35mm film was manufactured, to indicate a batch reference number. Alternatively, the negative may have been damaged by the photo lab that processed it (the reference number 122[...] maybe referring to the customer order number). Later the negative was marked up for cropping, prior to publication. The soldier has posed for a set up photograph. The weapon is a C96 Mauser, or the Chinese-made version known as the ‘Box Cannon’ (盒子炮) or ‘Red 9’. See Ro-n0102, Ro-n0103, Ro-n0104, Ro-n0105.
