University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: Ro-s006. Signs: CHEZ SMELL BAD, BAR, NEW DEAL. Typed and handwritten captions on back of photograph. Some typing crossed out by hand. 'Blood Alley' (officially named Rue Chu Pao San; now Xikou Lu) was a short road between Rue du Consulat and Avenue Edward VII, just off the Bund. Blood Alley was so called because of the frequent fist fights between foreign sailors and soldiers, especially during periods of international tension. In French Concession of Shanghai a scene from Rue Pao Shan, better known as "Blood Alley." Local saloon was named for a retired U.S. sailor who, returning to ship in Hankow allegedly stumbled over a "honey bucket" and smelled, how shall it be said? Bad?
