Soldier and defences around a building, Canton, June 1925

Notes

University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: Sh-s06. The Shakee Shaji images document events on 23 June 1925, in the aftermath of the May 30th shootings in Shanghai, when shooting broke out between demonstrating Chinese military cadets, and British and French servicemen and volunteers across the canal on Shameen/Shamian island, Canton (Guangzhou). It's not clear who opened fire first, but quite clear who had more firepower. This appears to be a view across the canal, probably from the concessions.
