Shaji Massacre, 1925 Collection
The Shakee/Shaji images document events in Guangzhou (Canton) on 23 June 1925, in the aftermath of the May 30th shootings of unarmed demonstrators by International Settlement police in Shanghai. A large procession, including armed military cadets, demonstrating against the killings in Shanghai, marched along the city's Shaji Bund, opposite the British and French concessions on Shamian Island. Shots were exchanged with defence forces on the island, who feared an assault, and scores of the marchers were killed. Responsibility for the outbreak, known as the Shaji (Shakee) Massacre was never established. Fourteen images. HPC ref: Sh-s.
