Ephgrave, Jack Collection
John ('Jack') William Ephgrave (1914-1979) was born in Shanghai. He began work aged fifteen, as an apprentice in the printing department of British American Tobacco’s China operation, the British Cigarette Company (BCC, also known as Yee Tsoong Tobacco Company Limited). Jack was later employed in BCC's subsidiary, Capital Lithographers Limited, Shanghai. Ephgrave took many of the photographs in this collection during the years 1929-1934, and compiled two large albums. The collection features images of printing and rowing, family and friends, aerial views of Shanghai, the Shanghai Volunteer Corps in training, and destruction due to the 'Shanghai Incident' in 1932 (Sino-Japanese War). By way of warning: some of the images in the Jack Ephgrave Collection depict potentially distressing execution scenes. 864 images. HPC refs: Ep01 and Ep02.
