Darwent, Charles Collection
The Revd. Charles Ewart Darwent (1858-1924), Minister of the Union Church, Shanghai from 1899 to 1919, was also an author and photographer. Darwent was a founding member and first chairman of the Shanghai Amateur Photographic Society (S.A.P.S.) and wrote the photographer-friendly guidebook Shanghai: a handbook for travellers and residents to the chief objects of interest in and around the foreign settlement and native city (c.1904). Bk06-01 is a portrait of him. The thirty-six images in the Charles Darwent Collection are from an album of photographs taken by him, in and around Shanghai, c.1902. The album was given to Herbert Wilcockson by Revd. Charles Darwent and is now held in Special Collections, University of Bristol Library, ref: DM3229/2. It was a companion Hayward family heirloom to the album in the Hayward Family Collection. See Revisiting Darwent's Shanghai (an exhibition about Charles Darwent’s photography). HPC ref: Da01.
