Vinden, Gilbert Collection
Gilbert Vinden was an architect who went to China from Reading, England, in 1920, as a missionary with the China Inland Mission (CIM). He met and married Ethel Dickson, a Canadian, in Chengdu, Sichuan Province. Their daughter Margaret was born there in 1926 and she attended the CIM School in Yantai (Chefoo). Gilbert and Ethel worked in Sichuan throughout the Second World War and Gilbert became the superintendent of the CIM workers in Sichuan. The couple left China in 1953. Margaret and Dickson, her brother, were interned at Weihsien Civilian Assembly Centre. The siblings left China in 1945 when they were released from the internment camp. A selection of the Gilbert Vinden Collection is currently online. HPC refs: GV-s, GV01 and GV02.
