A caption to a published reproduction of this photograph held in the Royal Ulster Rifles Museum, Belfast, identifies these men as follows: 'Three of the Riflemen in this group (James Mellon, manning Lewis Gun; C. Howard in front row with stick; and R. Delaney, shirtless, succumbed to injuries received from Japanese shell-fire on October 29’. Along with Joseph O’Toole, killed the same day, Mellon, William Christopher Howard and Robert Delaney, were four of the five casualties suffered by the RUR in October 1937, the fifth being Rifleman Patrick McGowan.
