Nye and his family lived in the house on the left. C.D. Nye was a merchant, at Nye, Bull & Co., Shanghai. In the garden is a pram (baby carriage). Some people are looking into the garden by the gate. Photograph taken from the verandah of the Commercial Bank of India. 'Taiping' or 'Tae-ping' (i.e. 'Heavenly Peace') was the hong of Gilman, Bowman & Co., tea traders, and the residence of William and Elizabeth Vacher.
