The large, two-funnelled, black steamship, nearer the camera, is flying the Messageries Maritimes houseflag ("MM"). This steamship is a vessel of the CALEDONIEN class, 4,200 gross tons, built in the early 1880s. The ships of the class were CALEDONIEN, MELBOURNE, NATAL, OCEANIEN, SALAZIE, SYDNEY and YARRA. Barely visible across the bow of the Messageries Maritimes ship are what appear to be two Butterfield & Swire beancakers of the HOIHOW class (1,400 gross tons, built in 1880). The two survivors of the HOIHOW class in the 1890s were HOIHOW and TAMSUI. The 'Pekin' paddle steamer is moored, in the background, on the right.
