Notes
University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: DH-s130. This is a detail from a panoramic view of the Huangpu River and Bund, Shanghai. Pootung (Pudong) is in the foreground. This detail shows the area from the Old Dock Foundry Machine shop (which is the lower roofed building at left) through to the Jardine, Matheson & Co. wharves at the centre and right. The four ships belong to Jardines and may be identified, left to right, as 1) The Yangtse river steamer TAI WO of 1881, operating to Hankow. 2) The coastal passenger steamer KOW SHING of 1883, operating in this period to Ningpo (Ningbo). 3) The coastal steamer FOOKSANG of 1881, operating in this period from Shanghai to Swatow (Shantou) and Hong Kong. 4) A coastal steamer built to Jardines’ own design, doubtless operating to Tientsin (Tianjin) via Chefoo (Yantai). There are two candidates consistent with the photographed vessel in the 1890-91 time frame: CHOY SANG of 1888 and YUEN SANG of 1889.
