University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: DH-s103. Part of a rolled up "joiner" panoramic view of the Huangpu River and Bund, Shanghai, made from 8 prints joined together. On the left, by the paper join, is the Gutzlaff Signal Pole. The large black steamship flying the P&O houseflag is either the PENINSULAR of 1888 or the ORIENTAL of 1889. At 5000 tons gross, these were the largest ships visiting Shanghai in the early 1890s.  Visits in the period 1890-91 were ORIENTAL (January 1890), PENINSULAR (February 1890), ORIENTAL (August 1890), ORIENTAL (March 1891), PENINSULAR (August 1891) and PENINSULAR (December 1891).
