Fry, John Gurney Collection

The John Gurney Fry Collection consists of an album thought to have been compiled by John Gurney Fry, who was born on 4 October 1838 at East Ham, Essex, England, and died on 1 October 1877 at Hornchurch, Essex, England, aged 39. John Gurney Fry was the brother of Jane Augusta Fry (1839-1887) and Frederick William Fry (1842-1901 or 1910) – being the grandchildren of Elizabeth Fry, the prison reformer. It seems that the album was later owned in turn by both Jane Augusta Fry and Frederick William Fry, after the early death of their brother. John Gurney Fry was resident partner in the firm of John Silverlock & Company, merchants, in Fuzhou (Foochow). He assisted in several public undertakings in the port, notably the Foochow Club, of which he was the principal promoter. His brother, Frederick William Fry, was a clerk at the same company. Many of the photographs in the album are by Lai Fong (Afong Studio) and a few are by John Thomson, dating from the late 1860s to the early 1870s. 158 images. See the blog posting: The John Gurney Fry Collection: tea, silver and chocolates. The album is held in Special Collections, University of Bristol Library, ref: DM2887. HPC ref: Fr01.
